Germany’s National Meteorological Service, the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), operates a series of radioactivity measurement stations to monitor the aerosol particle-bound radioactivity in the air. Different types of air monitors are used. Besides a gamma step filter (FHT59N), an alpha/beta iodine monitor (FHT59SIJ) and INSITU measuring systems are also used.

In November 2011, MeteoSolutions GmbH was commissioned to develop a concept for the requirements to monitor proper operation of the measuring network and for the implementation options using Nagios® monitoring software. Besides the technical aspects, the most suitable form of presentation was also to be considered. The outcome was documented in a detailed concept.

Building on this concept, the test criteria for the gamma step filter (FHT59N) were implemented as Nagios® plugins. A visualisation was moreover prepared as a single-page web application using the JavaScript programming language to cater to the special monitoring requirements of Germany’s national meteorological service (DWD). The system monitoring the DWD’s radioactivity measurement network has been in operation since 2012.
